Do you ever feel like you could just curl up in bed and sleep for a week?

I’d been feeling that way for a while. I was tired, and completely drained of energy. So tired that I started doing laundry, but left the dried clothes piled in two hampers for more than a week.

Dishes from the weekend were still near the sink, waiting to be washed..unable to fit in the dishwasher.

I didn’t want to cook.

And don’t even get me started on my lack of motivation when it came to working out….much less getting up in the morning.

It. Was. Rough.

I even started drinking coffee at work…although I hadn’t drank coffee consistently since high school. (I was going through a phase)

My husband would tell me I needed to go to bed earlier, but I couldn’t seem to turn the TV off and go to sleep. My brain would just suck in hours of mindless “reality” TV as I would slowly become comatose.

For some reason, I thought I could somehow expand my day if I just stayed awake, and that my energy would eventually come back. Not true. I’d just end up losing sleep, and becoming more sluggish the next day.

My mother-in-law finally suggested I do an herbal detox.

I did. It ended Monday, and honestly, I don’t know if I feel much different.

So I am truly thankful that my Tuesday started off as the first full day of a much-needed break from work.

I was able to keep my schedule clear, sleep until I felt rested, and lounge around until I felt like moving.

I was able to take a moment, slow down, and breathe.

And that made it easier to get the things done that I wanted to do days ago like…

Getting that laundry done without worrying about meeting a deadline.

Cleaning my house, and returning my kitchen counters to their immaculate existence without dreading it, and calculating the time I’d spend covered in suds merely as time I would never get back.

It’s so nice when you have the time and energy to complete everything on your to-do list.

I’d been trying to get things done on my own, but couldn’t find the energy until God gave me an opportunity to have uninterrupted rest…

And at the point where I really needed it: when I realized my efforts weren’t getting the job done.

The LORD replied, ā€œMy Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.ā€ – Exodus 33:14 (NIV)

ā€œRest when you’re weary. Refresh and renew yourself, your body, your mind, your spirit. Then get back to work.ā€ – Ralph Marston

What do you do when you feel sluggish? How do you renew yourself?

  1. I have felt the same way. I think some of it is because of the short days. I feel like a bear, ready to hibernate!! Today, I will do a little Christmas baking…I’m hoping this brings a little extra energy…

  2. Interesting how we beg children to nap (reminding them that it is good for them) but then have to find ways to justify rest for ourselves. I recently indulged in a rainy afternoon nap myself! Which is just another way of saying that I had to surrender to knowing that alone I was not going to accomplish anything. Thank you for that reminder.

  3. Good question, and perfect timing as many of us overextend ourselves during the holidays.

My anti-sluggish remedy is a quick walk outside, or a trip to the bathtub. And I’m a big fan of the 15-minute power nap. šŸ™‚

So, so glad you linked up. Be blessed as you find rest in Him.

  4. I live near the Marina and when I find myself in a funk, one I can’t seem to shake, I go for a walk. It’s something about looking at the boats, the fisherman’s wharf, and the ducks and seals playing in the water. The presence of the Lord is always there. In that still moment in which I’m not rushing around but rather looking at reflections in the water. In an instant, His voice always speaks so clearly and beckons me to come to Him. In that moment, I feel restored, renewed and ready to begin again. It’s amazing how that 5 minute walk changes my day, every time.

  5. a power nap, a short walk and sometimes, listening to good music and that includes the sound of my kids’ laughter and when they sing their favorite tune.
my kids will not be young forever, so each time they laugh and sing, i listen, and i know the song, i join in.
