About a year ago, my husband was asked to paint a set of murals for a local community center. He hauled the canvas’ home on a old, borrowed truck, and we carried them into the garage, one by one.

Each measuring about five to six feet tall, and six to seven feet wide…it was a major undertaking.

So major the initial excitement of putting the paint brush to canvas turned to dread. And then a revelation…that hit both of us hard.

Your approach to your creative process mimics your approach to life.

Whether you’re a writer, a painter, or a musician…it’s all the same.

My husband realized he paints and lives with a lot of fear and doubt because of an unrealistic desire to control and be perfect. (You can read more about that at Art Lessons From God). I, on the other hand, realized I write and live wanting organization and comparing myself to others for the same reasons.

When I sit down to write, I want to know the path and the destination before I get started.
And if I don’t, I get discouraged and search for the answers in the works of other writers. I try to dissect their writing and look for a plan…some pattern. Some way to make my writing “as good as theirs” all the time.

And there isn’t one.

I think that’s the reason why I always loved math growing up. There’s a specific process and only one answer. I can be right, and no one can dispute it.

I can be just as good as the best person out there. And know it.

For a moment, I’m perfect.

But writing isn’t like that.

You have to trust the process enough to just take it one step at a time (or draft by draft) until you create your own version of a masterpiece.

“Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does, the better” -Andre Gide

What does your creative process say about you? Are you letting God work with you to create your masterpiece?
